About of project:

Period: 09.10.2012 – 09.10.2016

Budget: €8,200,000

Implementing Agency: Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus

Locations: Eastern Partnership countries (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine) and the Russian Federation

The regional project will help the six Eastern Partnership countries and Russia to mitigate negative climate change implications, based on the countries’ national priorities. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus will be assisted with the implementation of the national climate change policy.

Goals and Objectives

Facilitate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and development of state-of-the-art approaches to the climate change policy in the partner countries. Promote dialogue between the European Union and the project participants; reinforce regional cooperation. Provide access to the EU climate change legislation.

Interim Outcomes: In spring 2013, national climate change mitigation programmes were developed in partner countries, including Belarus, with consultancy support provided under the project.

The Belarusian party was supported in the development of a concept of adapting agriculture to climate change. The Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) in greenhouse gas reduction was defined in accordance with the Climate Change Agreement adopted by the United Nations Climate Change Conference that was held in Paris at the end of 2015. The initiative aims to limit global warming to less than 2 °C and pursue efforts to the 1.5 °C limitation. The Paris Climate Change Agreement was signed by 171 countries, including Belarus.

A system to monitor reporting on and verification of greenhouse gas emissions was developed for major Belarusian companies.
