Preventing Non-communicable Diseases, Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle and Support to Modernization of the Health System in Belarus (BELMED)

About 90% of all deaths in Belarus are associated with non-communicable diseases (NCDs): 63% are cardiovascular, 14% are oncological. Their development is further provoked by harmful habits, poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. The burden of dangerous illnesses may be reduced by mitigating NCD-related risk factors.
Goals and Objectives: Facilitate the prevention of non-communicable diseases and the reinforcement of the public healthcare system, as well as promote healthy lifestyle. Special emphasis will be placed on the issues of maternity and childhood protection, prevention of children’s diseases and injuries.
Expected Outcomes: Development of a national information strategy of healthy lifestyle promotion and prevention of non-communicable diseases. It is planned to examine NCD risk factors based on the STEPS methodology of the World Health Organization.
A contest of initiatives of local authorities and non-commercial organizations will help to promote of a healthy lifestyle and prevention of NCDs. The implementation of at least 20 projects is planned in all regions of Belarus based on the contest’s outcomes.
Within the Project, great attention will be paid to the health of the growing generation. Medical staff will be trained to promote a healthy lifestyle among risk-group teenagers. Adolescent-friendly medical centers will open in all regions of Belarus; a special focus will be placed on the regions affected by the Chernobyl accident. It is also planned to open an information/methodology center for health monitoring of children and adolescents.
