The first in belarus specialized ecological classroom opens in Vicebsk voblast

An official opening ceremony of the first-in-Belarus My Country's Nature specialized ecological classroom at the Hermanovičy Secondary School will be held in the village of Hermanovičy, Šarkaŭščyna Raion, Viciebsk Voblast.

The classroom functioning will help raise the awareness of Šarkaŭščyna Raion residents about the value of natural resources and boost social commitments to addressing the environmental management issues and promoting a responsible and environmentally friendly conduct.

The classroom will also facilitate implementation of the principles of sustainable natural resource management in the education practices of the Hermanovičy Secondary School in Šarkaŭščyna Raion.

The ecological classroom was developed with financial support from the UNDP/Coca-Cola Foundation Project on Building the Capacity of Local Communities in Sustainable Management of Water Resources to Preserve the Jeĺnia Bog.

The official opening ceremony will be attended by Mr. Igor Mikhailovich Kachanovsky, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, representatives of the Šarkaŭščyna Raion administration, UNDP Belarus, Coca-Cola Beverages Belarus Production Enterprise, teachers and pupils of the Hermanovičy Secondary School.

The International Project on Building the Capacity of Local Communities in Sustainable Management of Water Resources to Preserve the Jeĺnia Bog was launched at the end of January 2016 at the site of the Jeĺnia bog in Miory and Šarkaŭščyna Raions of Viciebsk Voblast. Designed for one year, the initiative will help raise the awareness of the local population on issues of sustainable natural resources management, and the Jeĺnia Bog, in particular; it shall also facilitate development of the eco-tourism capacity of the region.

The new project will be funded by the Coca Cola Foundation within the framework of a new UNDP/Coca-Cola partnership initiative "New World: Inclusive Sustainable Human Development Initiatives". Administrative support to implementation of the project activities is provided by the UNDP/GEF Project "Landscape Approach to Management of Peatlands Aiming at Multiple Ecological Benefits" ("Peatlands-2").
