Strong CoM – Strengthening the Covenant of Mayors Movement in Belarus
More than 9,500 cities and provinces in various countries have acceded to the European initiative – the Covenant of Mayors, undertaking the commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40% by the year 2030.  There are 47 cities and towns in Belarus that are party to the Covenant. After accession, the city/town has to work hard on development of measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the climate change. In order to achieve the goal, the city/town needs to have specialist support and experience exchange with our member cities/towns.

Braslaŭ district - the first climate neutral municipality in Belarus
In February 2014, the town of Braslaŭ signed the Covenant of Mayors, undertaking the commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20% before the year 2020. By the year 2030, Braslaŭ District – a popular tourist recreation area – should become the first climatically neutral municipality in Belarus. It is planned to achieve these ambitious objectives through the use of renewable energy sources and promotion of energy efficiency ideas. Reduction of energy consumption would help the region save budget funds every year.

Development of Renewable Energy Sources in Navahrudak District – Road map for Ecological Clean Area
Navahrudak, the second Belarusian city after Polack to join the Covenant of Mayors in 2012, undertook commitments to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20 per cent by 2020. A number of energy efficiency programs and programs on introduction of renewable energy sources have been implemented in the region.

System of Automation for Vision of Energy and WATER: SAVE WATER
The Čavusy authorities actively work on energy saving and environmental protection issues. In spring 2014, the town became the eighth Belarusian settlement to accede to the Covenant of Mayors and undertake a number of commitments.  In particular, by 2020, carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced there by 20%, energy consumption by 20%; the share of renewable energy utilization will be increased by 20%. The SAVEWATER Project will offer a great opportunity for the city to fulfill the key elements of the Covenant.

PubLiCity: Energy Efficient Modernization of Public Lighting in the City of Polack

Polack, the first Belarusian city to become a member of the Covenant of Mayors, developed its own Sustainable Energy Action Plan with EU support. Adopted in 2012, the document includes a number of measures to improve the energy efficiency of municipal buildings and companies, renewable energy generation, expansion of green areas, enhancement of the operation of public transport and improvement of the street lighting system. The PubLiCity will offer another opportunity for Polack to fulfill its commitments under the Covenant of Mayors.

Energy Efficiency in Schools
The problem of energy saving is becoming more and more relevant for Belarus. Its solution, to a certain degree, depends on individual ecological culture. The Project demonstrates that teaching the basics of energy efficiency could begin at kindergarten.
