The First Energy Efficient College to Open in Viciebsk

On December 8, Viciebsk State Vocational/Technical College of Machine Building named after M.F. Shmyrev will open after an energy efficiency upgrade.

That educational establishment won the project initiative contest in Viciebsk Voblast. Under the EU/UNDP Project on Energy Efficiency in Schools, state-of-the-art energy efficient technologies were applied in the college in order to reduce energy saving almost 2 times. Solar collectors and heat recovery units for heating the supply air were installed on the roof; the walls and roofing were insulated; conventional windows were replaced by energy efficient windows. Besides, the energy intensive equipment in the kitchen was replaced; incandescent light bulbs were replaced with energy saving ones; and heat reflective screens were installed behind space heaters.

The educational aspect is as important in the project implementation as the technical component. After the training of the college professors in teaching the matters of energy efficiency that was arranged under the Energy Efficiency in Schools Project, the educational establishment launched energy saving classes and began to develop its own methodological materials on this topic.

Viciebsk State Vocational/Technical College of Machine Building named after M.F. Shmyrev, as a pilot site of the Energy Efficiency in Schools Project, will serve as a demonstration ground for the integrated approach to implementation of energy efficiency activities.

The Project was implemented with financial support from the European Union, the Government of the Republic of Belarus and the Viciebsk Voblast Executive Committee. The Project was implemented by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Office in the Republic of Belarus and the Energy Efficiency Department of the State Standardization Committee of the Republic of Belarus.
