Energy Efficiency in Schools

About of project:

Project Period: 06.09.2013 – 30.04.2017

Budget: € 2,000,000 (EU contribution)

Implementing Agency: United Nations Development Programme in Belarus

Location: Belarus

Description

The problem of energy saving is becoming more and more relevant for Belarus. Its solution, to a certain degree, depends on individual ecological culture. The Project demonstrates that teaching the basics of energy efficiency could begin at kindergarten.

Project Goals and Objectives: Based on the example of four pilot educational institutions in various parts of the country, develop a functioning model of teaching the basics of energy efficiency. It is planned to disseminate this practice throughout Belarus.

Project Outcomes: A contest of project initiatives on energy efficiency was held in three Regions – Minsk, Hrodna and Viciebsk. 4 winners out of 33 applicants were selected: Secondary School № 4 (Dziaržynsk), Nursery/Kindergarten № 6 (Ašmiany), Nursery/Kindergarten № 45 (Hrodna) and Viciebsk State Machine Building Vocational/Technical College named after M.F. Shmyrev.

The installation of solar panels allows cutting the costs for heating by 50-100 percent (depending on the season). The use of a heat-recovery system reduces the heat coming out with the exhaust gas by 60-70 percent. The walls and the roof in the educational institutions have been provided with the heat insulation. As the result, the energy consumption for space heating will be reduced by 35 percent from the overall heat consumption.

The project allowed providing 1,670 children with more comfortable, warmer and brighter studying conditions.

Due to the technologies introduced by the project, thermal and electrical energy consumption in educational institutions will be reduced twice.

The energy-efficient technologies introduced by the project have already shown impressive results. Monitoring for six months of four pilot sites in total:

- Reduction of heat energy consumption of 45% (average for all facilities)

- The decrease in energy consumption is 43% (on average for all objects)

- Saving money for all facilities -158.203 Belarusian roubles (€ 80.000 )

During the training workshops and seminars held by the Project staff, the teachers of the pilot establishments learned how to explain in simple terms the complicated aspects of energy saving. 27 teachers were selected and trained by the project’s experts to teach EE issues at optional classes in educational institutions.

The best practices developed in the framework of trainings became the basis for methodical manual “Energy Efficient School: It is Time to Act!” issued by the project.

As part of the Project, teachers and students of the pilot establishments held educational games, matinees, excursions and contests in the kindergartens. Thus, the number of project stakeholders – local residents – kept growing.

The “Energy Saving Ambulance” information series, including coloring books, comic books, a board game and cartoons, became a kind of hallmark of the Project.

Four educational institutions will act as demonstration sites for the introduction of energy-efficient technologies demonstrating the benefits of using renewable energy sources.
