Description

Despite the large number of landmarks and recreation areas, Belarus lacks experience to enable successful development of the tourism sector. Meanwhile, tourism is a driver of national economic development.

Project Goals and Objectives: Provide support to sustainable economic development of four regions of Belarus by boosting the flow of tourists. Tourism development strategies, as well as recommendations on improving the quality of tourist services, will be developed for each region, based on the best European practices. These activities will be carried out in cooperation with local authorities and owners of tourist attractions.

Intermediate Outcomes: With support from the National Statistical Committee, a Tourism Satellite Account System (TSA) was developed and launched in Miadzeĺ. It allows for more efficient planning of local tourism.

All four tourist attractions were analyzed; the data will be used for developing concrete recommendations. Local entrepreneurs and tourist attraction owners will benefit from financial and practical assistance.

The Project provides for the development of a website to promote tourist services in Belarus, as well as publication of public awareness materials. Professionals from Latvia will share information about their best practices. The number of Belarusian and foreign tourists is expected to grow in all four regions by 20% upon implementation of the Project. The Belarusian tourism sector will be able to apply the experience on a broad scale.
