Nearly 600 prisoners in the Homieĺ region were involved in “Education Opens Doors” an educational project financed by the European Union.
The convicts received training as stove builders, welders, hairdressers, nail artists and were taught how to use the computer, plan their budget and avoid conflicts. Twenty-three women inmates joined distance learning courses run by higher education institutions, the first cohort of female inmates involved in undergraduate programmes in Belarus.
The prisoners were taught by instructors from education institutions, companies and civil society organizations.
As many as 125 people took part in training seminars, courses and study trips within the framework of the project. A set of recommendations for developing the educational system of Belarus' correctional institutions was adopted at a final conference in November 2016.
