A large-screen bike e-counter was installed in Niezaliežnasci Avenue in Minsk (opposite to the building at 43 Niezaliežnasci Ave). The counter shows how many cyclists have passed it in a day/year. So far, the device is operating in the test mode.
– Many people still believe that there are very few cyclists in the city; however, we are positive that the bike counter data will make even sceptics change their minds – asserts Pavel Gorbunov, Board Chairperson of Minsk Cycling Community.
The information collected by the bike counter will be useful for transportation experts: it will help them with making assessments of the cycling movement growth rate, the busiest hours and the movement speed.
The bike counter will eventually get its web page with all publicly available information in charts and table form.
The counter frame is covered with solar panels providing for its operation in an eco-friendly mode as much possible, without an external power source. The bike counter counts riders of both bicycles and e-scooters. It is in running in the debug mode now.
Niezaliežnasci Avenue was selected for the bike counter installation on purpose, as it is one of the busiest and most central locations in the city.
The device was installed with the EU financial support under the Urban Cycling in Belarus project. The project is implemented by Minsk Cycling Community and the Centre for Environmental Solutions.
