Description
Many women and children – victims of domestic violence – do not have prompt access to protection and support services. At the moment, Belarus lacks shelters or qualified professionals for them. There is also a need for large-scale public awareness activities against domestic violence and for the peaceful resolution of family conflicts.
Goals and Objectives: Protect the right of women and children to a safe family environment; provide professional assistance to victims of violence. The campaign will be facilitated by the establishment of two temporary accommodation centres for victims of domestic violence, as well as the provision of public awareness services to women and children in the at-risk group. Specialized training will be provided to representatives of public and non-governmental organisations dealing with this population group. There are also plans to disseminate information through the media.
Intermediate Outcomes: More than 100 vulnerable women with children have received support within the framework of the project. Apart from accommodation, they were provided with psychological and counselling assistance. A shelter has been opened and operates now in the village of Baraŭliany, where victims of domestic violence undergo psychological rehabilitation. A number of workshops on helping victims of domestic violence have been held for professionals—psychologists, the staff of education institutions, local social services centres, Minsk Region socio-pedagogical centres, and specialised non-governmental organizations.
