Contest of mini-grants for local initiatives of nongovernmental organizations in Baranavičy, Mahilioŭ and Čavusy

The ComManaging Municipality (COMMA) Project: communication and management for community involvement in municipal governance in Belarus, which is implemented with support from the European Union, announces a contest of mini-grants for funding community initiatives in the project's partner towns: Baranavičy, Mahilioŭ и Čavusy.

The contest is open for nongovernmental organizations, associations, institutions engaged in the spheres of urban development and municipal governance, environment, social issues, history, culture and education. Informal local initiatives and groups of citizens should seek support from officially registered organizations acting as the key applicant.

The community initiative projects must be aimed at developing and augmenting demonstration projects that are under implementation in the partner towns by the EU COMMA Project and local administration (see the contest description). Local administrations' demonstration projects have been implemented since 2017; the project themes were co-developed with the partner towns' communities:

•   Baranavičy: "Construction of a Multifunctional Playground at Pramyslovaja Street in Baranavičy"

•   Mahilioŭ: Landscaping “Padnikollie City Park Landscaping in Mahilioŭ"

•   Čavusy: “Greening for Historical Centre Restoration in Čavusy".

Examples of activities eligible for support within the mini-grant contest:

• landscaping, greening
• improving area attractiveness and creating public spaces
• improving energy performance and use of eco-friendly technologies

• improving area management and planning, supporting dialogue organization
• creating demonstration/training facilities on environmentally oriented urban lifestyle, energy efficiency, etc.
• developing and implementing educational and information programmes on raising awareness and understanding of the goals of sustainable urban development, participatory management, community engagement in urban planning and management.

The total amount of allocations for the mini-project implementation in each town is Euro 5,000. These funds may be allocated for the implementation of a single mini-project, or shared by several projects.

The estimated commencement date: September 2018. The project duration: 4-5 months. The project completion date: no later than April 15, 2018.

Baranavičy: Phase 1 (project concepts): September 8; Phase 2 (applications): September 20
Mahilioŭ: September 10, 2018
Čavusy: August 25, 2018.

Information about the COMMA Project:

The ComManaging Municipality (COMMA) Project: communication and management for community involvement in municipal governance in Belarus is implemented with support from the European Union in three Belarusian towns: Mahilioŭ, Čavusy, Baranavičy. The Project goal is to demonstrate, based on the case studies of the three Belarusian cities, ways of improving municipal governance and urban residents' wellbeing through efficient cooperation between local authorities and communities, or participatory management. The Project is coordinated by the administration of the city of Jelgava (Latvia). Expert support is provided by the IWO initiative (Germany). Coordination and expert support in Belarus are provided by Ecoproject International NGO.
